André Lundquist (b. 1972) is a Danish artist who is inspired by literature and moments from his own life. He is fascinated with people and their relations with nature and the world, and how everything is connected. His paintings are made by building up several layers, and the compositions often take form in unexpected ways. He works his way around the canvas and the direction changes as he works on each layer, as he adds new motifs, making each layer weave into each other. The result is a complex surface consisting of layers of stories.

The artworks refer to a palimpsest, which in ancient Rome was a wax-covered board made of animal skins. The writing was scraped off and a new one was written. It created layers of words that wove into each other. In the same way, André Lundquist sees our being as layers of memories, lived life, relationships, experiences, dreams, grief and love. He insists that we are not alone in the world and that everything is inextricably linked.

André Lundquist is a member of BKF (NBK in Norway) and Fondation Taylor (Paris). He received his basic education with visual artist Therese Dragshøj, supplemented by a total of three years of art college including Holbæk Art College. He received the Jean Vincent-Darasse prize on the occasion of his participation in the Salon du Dessin et de la Peinture à l’Eau at the Grand Palais (Paris).

André Lundquist has received awards and scholarships, including a scholarship from the Beckett Foundation, which gave him a residency in southern Spain at the Foundation Valparaiso. He is represented in private collections in England, Taiwan and Australia and has exhibited in museums and galleries since 1996 in several countries including New York, France, Italy, Portugal, Belgium, Sweden and Norway and Denmark.

André Lundquist’s works appear in several books and record contexts, most recently for La chambre des époux by the French writer Eric Reinhardt. In 2016, Avant – Aprés was published, which is a conversation book with six different authors who each write from their own creative position (art history, manuscript, poems, novels and architecture) as well as many works from his 27 years in the international art scene.
