Alex Merritt was born in Washington DC. He received a BFA in painting from MICA and completed his MFA at the New York Academy of Art. He currently lives and works in NYC and Jersey City. Works from Merritt are in numerous private collections worldwide and currently has had a collection of works acquired by liana Gore Museum in Tel Aviv, Israel. The artist joined New York based Booth Gallery in 2018.

His paintings and drawings emerge through a continuous process of creation and destruction- employing a variety of techniques that draw on influences ranging from the old masters to abstract expressionism. Often their surfaces are slashed, scratched, scraped, or melted. Emotionally charged, deeply psychological, and defined by internal conflict-his works are meant to be felt before they are understood.
