Anne-Sophie Øgaard
Anne-Sophie Øgaard’s work addresses the boundaries that lie between sculpture and painting. Sculpture holds the possibility of magic; things can appear or disappear depending on where you stand in relation to the work. Paintings do not function like this; no matter where you stand, the painting will always look essentially the same. That relationship is a source of inquiry in how her paintings are conceived, perceived, received by the audience as well as how it addresses the space. Where form and colour become a subject matter for how light functions. Light enables vision in a meaningful connection with the world through the fact that people respond to the space based on the way the light exposes it to them. For Øgaard, intuitively, light becomes a medium, creating the illusion of perspective and depth in her work. People’s perception and response to the space will be manipulated as the light changes, and the impression of her work will change as well. Forcing the viewer’s movement and active participation with time and space.
When we talk about how ideas are constructed, for Øgaard it is the «architecture» of her thoughts. Reducing forms to basic elements. The interplay between the additive and subtractive, where construction, deconstruction and reconstruction og the surface constitutes the essence of her work. She appropriates paint conceptually as her “own paint”. Øgaard’s work has dimensional qualities like in a sculpture, but she doesn’t approach them as a sculpture. Even though she is using untraditional mediums like sand, cement and plaster, Øgaard still consider her work as a painting, and herself as a painter.
Anne-Sophie holds an MFA in Visual Communication from ESDI Paris 2005.
